USE OF ACROBAT READER

Normally, in order for you to be able to view a file on your computer, your computer must have the same program that was used to create the file. (For example, if someone sends you an e-mail attachment with ".doc" at the end, you would need Microsoft Word on your computer in order to read it..) In the case of looking at book publications on one's computer, most people do not have expensive, publishing programs like Adobe Pagemaker or Quark Express, used to create books.

In the case of this history book, on this site without Acrobat Reader you would need Pagemaker on your computer in order to read or print anything. However, with the available free software, Acrobat Reader, loaded on your computer, you can read and/or print from this book.

Now, many people using the Internet today have Acrobat Reader on their computer without even realizing it; the installer is available for free at the Adobe site <http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html> and on this site.

To test whether you need to install it, double-click on the icon titled 9thHistoryBook.pdf and, if you see the history book on your computer screen, this means that you already have Acrobat Reader on your computer and do not need to use the Acrobat Reader installer.. On the other hand, if you get a message like "Could not find the application that created this document" on your screen, then you will need to double-click on the Installer folder and go through the specific steps, whether PC or Mac, to install Acrobat Reader on your hard drive. When you double-click on the Acrobat Reader installer, its file opens up (decompresses), and it will ultimately create a window (folder) containing an additional "Read Me" file to help you with the specifics of using Acrobat Reader.

PROCEDURE FOR PRINTING INDIVIDUAL PAGES

(The computer won’t bring up individual pages by history book page number, hence this guide):

The history book had 16 preliminary pages which were not given Arabic page numbers (they had Roman numerals); the Arabic numbers started with the first page of Chapter 1. Further, there are sections of the book with photos, graphics, etc. which were not numbered at all; these have now been given numbers in Version I, such as 34a, 34b, etc. So, in Version I the whole book runs 411 pages. And Version II has 20 pages less than Version I, or 391. Complicating matters, the computer programs which created this web page require a continuous sequence of numbers from the first page to the end of the book,or, for separate chapters, from the first to last page of the
chapter.
Therefore, to identify for the computer any individual page that you have brought up on the screen and want to print, look to the bottom of the screen and pick the correct number listed there.. For example, when you bring up page 76 from the full book icon of Version I, at the bottom of the screen you will see 110 of 411; so, then bring up your print screen and type in “From” 110 and in ”To” 110, and it will print that page. If you bring up page 76 from separate chapter 5, you will see at the bottom of the screen (4 of 40); use the first number in parentheses; so type in “From” 4 and “To” 4.and then print. For Version II, follow the same procedure, though the numbers may be different.

NOTE: A CD of Version I—which includes an additional ingenious indexing system that provides the capability for individual photo and graphic printing and/or e-mailing—may be ordered with a personal check or money order (no credit card) for $10 each, including shipping & handling, from Carnavale & Associates, Inc., P.O. Box 1230, Sonoita,AZ 85637.
